At seven months of age she was operated on by Open Heart International to fix her congenital heart condition, which caused her breathing problems since birth.

Balquis had a Ventricular Septal Defect, which is a hole in the wall separating the two lower chambers of the heart.

She also had a PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosus)meaning the ductus arteriosus fails to close after birth.

Her mum Khadija Nyamata, from Tesire which is 45 minutes away, is happy she received the operation.

“It (the operation) will help her to breath better, get better and live a better life,” Khadija says.

“What you (Open Heart International) did for us and other patients before us is amazing and I thank you.”
