#KNOCKTOBER: Pathfinders

On October 17th, Avondale Memorial Pathfinders hit the streets of Cooranbong in their full uniform, armed with a pen, a receipt pad, and an abundance of youthful energy. Their mission: to inform their local community about ADRA, and collect monetary donations towards our many projects.   Over 50 young people between the ages of ten and sixteen participated in this year’s appeal, raising a grand total of $3121.90. “We send them out in groups of two or three,” says Pathfinder leader Jon Knight, “There’s always an older pathfinder with a younger one – that way, the older kids can show the younger kids how it’s done, and build up their confidence.” It’s intimidating at first, but by the third or fourth house they’ve got a spiel ready for their mysterious new friend behind the next door. The Pathfinders greet each household with big smiles and a determined attitude. People within the community respond sweetly to the passionate young people, which sparks their interest in ADRA and inspires them to donate to the cause.   “It was pretty hot out there,” says Companion-level Pathfinder Ben, “But it was entertaining to see all the different people that opened the doors, and the things they said. They were all nice.” Ben announces proudly that his group raised $272.90 together. Most Pathfinder Clubs across Australia participate in the ADRA Appeal annually. It’s a great way to get young people involved in their home communities and build their confidence, as well as raise awareness and funds for the projects of ADRA.
