Dr Ian Nicholson was today announced as a NSW finalist in the Australian of the Year Awards.

Dr Nicholson is one of Australia’s leading cardiothoracic surgeons, and a regular volunteer with Open Heart International. Dr Nicholson was first involved as a surgical registrar in 1994 when he travelled to Fiji. Nowadays he is one of the most active volunteers, being a part of 37individual teams to date in Cambodia, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, Solomon Islands, Tanzania,Tonga and Vanuatuand Tanzania.

“It is a great honour to be a State Finalist for the Australian of the Year Award in recognition of my work with Open Heart International. This work is not successful because of one person, but because ofan amazing team of committed people that I am part of. The team spirit, and the legacy that we’re able to leave in the countries we work, is what continues to drive us all. It is also quite humbling to be recognised alongside other great Australians who are allvery worthy nominees.”said Dr Nicholson

The Australian of the Year Award celebrates the achievement and contribution of eminent Australians by profiling leading citizens who are a role model for the country. Through their achievements, they challenge all Australians to make their own community to creating a better country.

The NSW winner is announced later this month, with the national winner announced on Australia Day next year.
